RE: Should I trade my 08 Silverado 1/2 ton for a Duramax?

^^^Not sure if your mad at me or what. The six in a row comment was for the poster that said duramax was best in class in thier opinion. I gave my opinion. Not taking sides. Anyway glad the op figured out what was best for him.

RE: Should I trade my 08 Silverado 1/2 ton for a Duramax?

Oh, and our GMC is the Duramax...best on the market in our opinion.
Six in a row, are better for tow. Sorry couldn't resist that. Love my cummins.
You know there is a bit of truth to that. A 6-cylinder engine tends to have a longer stroke than a V8 with the same displacement, which tends to be better for low end torque, while the V8 tends to be better for high end HP. This is quite apparent when you compare the 5.9L ISB to the 6.0L PSD. The Duramax has a 10% displacement advantage over both, so to be fair about the L6 vs V8 comparison, it's HP & torque ratings should be reduced and you'll see that the Duramax falls short, theoretically. However, in the real world we don't use theoretical values to pull our rigs, so the Duramax compares very favorably to the Cummins.
IMHO, the standard gauge of engine durability is the B50 life of the engine. B50 Life: This means that 50% of the engines at this mileage will require an internal engine repair or a major overhaul. Interestingly, the Cummins ISB isn't the winner in this class of diesel engine. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any B50 life specs for the Duramax.
Cat C7 500,000 miles
Cummins ISB 300,000 miles
IHC VT-365 (PSD) 375,000 miles
Isuzu 6H 410,000 (B10 life, only 10% require internal repair/o'haul)
IHC DT-466 500,000
If only Ford had contracted to use IHC's DT466 instead of the VT365. :S
Yes you are completly spot on, I just didn't have the time to get into it all that last night. Also you can't kill an in-line 6. Even look at the old ford gasser in-line 6, it was bullet proof. Nothing at all against the dmax, in fact pound for pound it would probably smoke me if we were to race stock in a quarter mile. But pound for pound, the cummins will out pull hands down. Sorry I know this thread isn't about what we are talking about, but it is interesting info to some. Not trying to hyjack. Wonder if the op has done anything yet?

Sorry Hornet. Thought that was directed to me, and now realize you were asking the op what he ended up doing.
What did you end up doing?

What did you do?
Gave an opinion and let the op know that it was a biased one.

RE: Should I trade my 08 Silverado 1/2 ton for a Duramax?

We towed a 30' Nomad TT for 7 years with a 96 GMC 1/2 ton (5.7 / 3.73's). Similar weights to what you have. There's no doubt that our diesel has lots more power. Nice to use cruise control on the open road.
HOWEVER, we towed many miles with our old truck. Yes it worked harder, slowed more on the hills, hated strong headwinds, hardly ever used cruise control, rarely used overdrive, etc. But we got along OK and for the most part running normal speeds.
Don't be afraid to work your truck. Watch the temps and excessive shifting.
Thank-you!!!
It's refreshing to hear that from someone that currently has a diesel, not trying to convince everyone that a diesel is needed for everyone. I really thought this post would be one sided.
Didn't know that having a opinion put's you on a certain side. This forum is about advise and opinion, and if you turn it in to one side verus the other, then it don't do anyone no good.

RE: to use moth balls or not?

Anybody ever try these?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160038256607&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&viewitem=
I used mothballs once. No mice, but holy stink. I used the fresh cab and no mice, with a pleasant smell. Anymore I don't use anything, and I still don't get mice. Just thought I would share the Fresh Cab thing with you all, and wondered if any one else uses it, or know if it works for anyone else.

I'm have sort of a biased opinion but, DIESEL, DIESEL, DIESEL, DIESEL, DIESEL. One more thing to add. CUMMINS, CUMMINS, CUMMINS, CUMMINS. Just messing with ya a little. Duramax is ok too.

RE: New Dodge 1500 pickup

I think you heard wrong. No offence. The half tons changed in 09, and the 2500, and 3500's will change in 2010. But I don't think the half ton 09 is a one year deal.

RE: Dodge1500 4.7 or 5.3 Tow Capacity

The new 09 hemi is laying down some impressive numbers. Close to 500 torque if I remember right. I had a 06 hemi, and it towed ok, just seemed to lack in power and got 6 mpg. Switched to a 08 cummins, and upgraded tt. If I didn't look in the mirrors, I wouldn't know it was back there.

RE: Walking On Roof

OK... so given this some thought... what you need to do is higher yourself a crane truck, get yourself a harness and have the crane operator dangle you just above the area you need to work on...
hehe...
or you could just do as the manual says and lay down some sheets of flimsy plywood, I saw your comments about carpeting the plywood, you might find that simply sticking some good corrugated cardboard to the plywood is all you need.
I'm a crane operator, and can hook you up with this idea.

RE: Sprinter 242RKS

No real problems with mine. Power awnings are junk though, and I got to get my slides looked at next spring because they won't come in without kicking the breaker off at least once.

I was on the roof of my keystone sprinter today blowing leaves off, and it sort of felt like I should have read the manual first to know if I should walk on my roof. LOL

RE: Winterization

On my 09 keystone sprinter the bypass is just a single valve on the cold water in line near the bottom of the WH. Yes you could just pour the pink into the tank. It's going to take more antifreeze that way, but it's a fairly simple way to do it. Or find your pump, and see if you have a winterization kit. It will look like a hose laying there going to nothing with a valve to turn. If you have that then stick the hose into a jug of the pink stuff, turn the valve, turn the pump on, and suck directly from the jug. Pouring into the tank is the way I've always done it. Less chance of making a mess inside the tt. I've also been known to fill the WH with antifreeze, but have been told recently not to do so.

RE: Unhitched nerves

Ha! The only time that's ever happened to me was when I forgot to unhook the chains. Didn't make me nervous, just made me mad that I did something so stupid. Packed campground too, so that made it even better. Why am I even telling you all this?

RE: winterizing in california?

Living in Iowa, it's already been down to 28 degrees a few nights. Mine tt is winterized, but lot's of people I know have not yet, and they are not worried at all. Like someone else said, it's got to be pretty darn cold, for a period of time before it will freeze. Just my opinion, and I think you will be fine.

2008 dodge 3500 mega cab dually with some added goodies. 405 rwhp, 832 torque. Kind of an overkill, but sure is fun to drive.

RE: Awning Situation

I just wish I still could drop my awning down on one side. Dang power awning!! Funny little story. When we first started camping I could not figure out why everyone had thier awnings cocked. It bugged me to no end, and I just wanted to go tell these people that thier awnings were crooked. One night it rained, and rained hard. Couldn't even open my door the next morning. No real damage was done, but once I pushed my way out it took all I had to push up and roll some of it off. Once I thought it was light enough to lower the arm, I was wrong, and it slammed the camper with such a force that I knew something had to give, but still nothing broke. I just got soaked. Anyway, moral of the story, I started to lower one side, and at night I would drop it down quite a bit. Now I'm just screwed with this electric piece of junk.
